Products Created on SILK
What is Silk ? What we know as SILK is a natural fiber, actually a biological fiber. It is not like other natural fibers as cotton or linen because these come from plants. The silk fiber is harvested from the Silk Worm and is the thread that the silk worm uses to cocoon itself which is the natural life cycle of it’s existence. The harvested thread will be processed until it is a beautiful white thread. By nature silk threads are different in consistency , some a little thicker other much lighter and often have bumps or little knots in it. These little uneven threads make the silk once woven so unique and special. Weaving is done with sometimes just one thread and these silks are the very sheer ones we see in special clothing. Other spinning is done by combining several threads into one which produces a heavier thread in order to weave different silk fabrics. Some of these silk fabrics are known as, chiffon, satin, habotai, broadcloth, crepe de chine, brocade just to name a few. All SILK FABRIC should be rather hand washed than dry cleaned. The chemical treatment dry cleaners use are harmful to the biological silk fiber. Hand washing is gentle . One should wash in normal water temperature that is comfortable to the hand, never hot, then rinsed several times in clean water. Followed by gently rolled in a towel and pressed lightly, never twisted because the biological fiber may break as opposed to the plant fibers. The silk should then dry a little and must be ironed while still damp. This will get all the winkles out. Do not sprinkle with water to iron, this will leave ugly marks and the silk has to be rinsed again to get the right process going. Commercial died silk fabric may often bleed, that is when the processing has not been completed correctly. Just add a little vinegar to the rinsing water and it will stop bleeding. The HAND PAINTED SILK you will find on this website is processed correctly in time consuming fashion. However, there might still be a little residue of dye left when washing, but this is not bleeding. The piece of silk will remain having it’s brilliant and luminous colors.
Gudrun Design presents different works on silk, all hand painted and thus unique especially the SCARVES . These scarves are often similar but the design is never repeated, can not repeat the same way as the other one, Since this fiber has it’s own way of reacting to the touch of an individual artist. All work is unique. The visitor will find SILK PAINTINGS on this site. These paintings are created as are others in watercolor on paper or oil on canvas, however the difference is the medium and the processing that the artist has to dominate well in order to present a work of art.
